Although foreign affairs was not a big topic of discussion during the British election campaign, both candidates expressed their deep concern about the continuing deterioration of the Middle East peace process.
Prime Minister Tony Blair, who won yesterday's elections according to early exit polls, told Ha'aretz earlier this week that "the situation in the Middle East is nothing short of heartbreaking. The sense of optimism and hope that was clearly present a mere eight months ago has now all but disappeared. The fact that peace is in great peril is tragic for all people in the region." He noted, however, that "despite the understandable anger expressed, there must be a continued commitment to the process of achieving peace."
