This is a big requirement in terms of publishing and managing the whole site especially as it’s only me.
The site is written in HTML but built in components (i.e. page and advert for the page) using Java Server Pages (JSP) allowing object oriented based techniques to take the workload.
Using a java application I wrote, the complete (or partial site) is built offline (in my bedroom) then I ftp the lot up.
I'm working on content now for http://www.thisistheworld.com my next project. I know I will need friends all over the world to get stories etc coming in. Still it's exciting even though I haven't found a way to earn my living with it; I love publishing stories from and about people rather than the usual media bad news coverage that just depresses me.

Check out www.postnuke.com, its a great Content Management System with hundreds of modules and blocks built for portal sites like yours. It uses PHP and MySQL. Let me know what you think.

    Hiya minusthejihad

I'm not qualified to comment on PHP as I haven't used it. I've had a brief look at the site and what strikes me is a healthy support forum as well as a cool looking site. The fact that it's open source is a winner although there is the investment of learning how to use it. But it certainly looks the business.
I'll have a closer look after I've finished my work.
Or let me know if I can help in something in particular also.

Lets put it this way, since I've gone with postnuke, I haven't programmed a site in anything else lately, there are just too many cool modules, blocks, hacks, etc. that allow me to do everything I need to with a site and I can get one up in 20 minutes now.

The support is very very good, and you can also get support from other sites that publish modules, themes, or blocks. I'll PM you a couple of examples of sites I've built in postnuke.
