Holiday Ad Has Hidden Hate Message
    Hanukkah Flier Contains Anti-Semitic Line

    POSTED: 4:43 PM CST December 11, 2003
    UPDATED: 5:50 PM CST December 11, 2003

DALLAS -- A holiday shopping flier that's been distributed to thousands of households in north Texas is creating controversy because a message of hate is included within an advertisement.

An ad for "Party City" was supposed to highlight a sale on Hanukkah items, but it also contained a hateful anti-Semitic message.

The advertisement includes the sentence "CC Hates the Jews" in large, bold letters.

According to ADVO, the company that printed the advertisement, a graphic artist working on the ad had left his desk for a moment, and a co-worker with the initials C.C. changed the text on the ad.

The graphic artist didn't notice the change and the ad went to print.

However, despite the explanation, the Anti-Defamation League wants more questions answered.

"How did it get out of the graphic shop in Pittsburgh? How did it get by ADVO? How did it get by the printer and all of that?" Mark Briskman said.

ADVO representatives in Dallas said they are mortified by the oversight and that they are trying to figure out why the error was never caught.

I think someone should invest in a pair of glasses. I would think that some legally blind people would be able to read that message.

"Holiday Ad Has Hidden Hate Message"

Actually the biggest blindest hatefull morons seem to work @NBC5i since there is absolutely NOTHING hidden in that message. It's clearly printed in large white easy to read letters.

It doesn’t seem like it’s a case of “Cant see the forest for the trees”.

Can you imagine if it had of been an anti-Islam "slip-up"? Right on, Humus, any recompense should go to Jewish victims of hatred! This story blew me away; blatant anti-Semitism doesn't seem to count by any measure... it scares the hell out of me!! Not to mention, it p*sses me off, big time!!

If this photo I looked at, was the actual message, there is NO POSSIBLE way that this could have been overlooked!

They should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

"CC" is the nickname of the artist that was working on the copy version when a co-worker thought it would be funny to add the comment that I won't even mention again. This worker has already obviously been fired.
Sweeping it under the rug by simply firing this CC cant be allowed.
There should be a massive internet push to have him prosectuted, as well as the company itself.

I was in the publishing business for a good (debatable) number of years. Though, I may not have been in the printing end of the business, these things can and do happen, unfortunately. That said the company is still responsible for the end product; they hired and fired the rogue but should do more than apologize. As someone mentioned (sorry, I forgot who), that there should be some measure of recompense, perhaps to the victims of anti-Semitism, or victims of terrorism in Israel.
I believe ADVO is sincere in its apology; suing is not the answer, but the next move is ADVO’s; as I feel apologies come up a tad short in this instance.

I imagine that the layout for a flyer of this nature is laid out in Framemaker and then the disk is handed over to the printer (proof ready). The printer feeds the disk into a computer and starts printing. I wouldn’t blame the printer in this case because he might not have looked at the materials.

In the days gone by there would have been typesetting, color separation to make 3 or more negatives (for pictures), make the proofs, burn the plates and then print the flyers on a offset printer. It was a lengthy costly process and it passed through a lot of hands.

I bought an offset printer when I was a diaper and I had a lot of fun printing pictures. My friend owned a big printing shop and he let me set it up in a corner his staff showed me the ropes when we weren’t playing poker or three card Monte.

So true, Lamplighter, in the "old days" it was easier, or so it seems to me, to catch like that! We are aging ourselves though!

I watched the development of printing up until the mid 80's and it was out of this world. Somewhere around the mid 70's to late 70's he bought a machine that would do typesetting and color separation ( it cost him around $ 65,000.00) now you could do it on an old PC and head down to the printers or do it yourself

That technology couldn’t do everything because he had an old Heidelberg press (about 100 years old) for the raised printing and for the 24K gold.

The good ol' days... as said what took ten/fifteen people to do... one to four can do it now... I recall the mid 80's when people were layed-off in the multitudes in the business... a lot of lives took a blow or six; especially, those who were a tad in their mid-years!
