    Hijack planner Abul Abbas
    dies in U.S. custody

Updated: 5:27 p.m. ET March 09, 2004RAMALLAH, West Bank - Abul Abbas, head of a Palestinian splinter group, who masterminded the 1985 hijacking of an Italian passenger ship in which an American tourist was killed, has died in U.S. custody in Iraq, Palestinian officials said Tuesday.

The ship, the Achille Lauro, was commandeered by Abbas’ small Palestine Liberation Front. Palestinian militants threw an elderly wheelchair-bound Jewish American tourist, Leon Klinghoffer, overboard.

Abbas was captured in Iraq in April by U.S. forces. Late Tuesday, officials in Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat’s office, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Abbas had died in U.S. custody.

In Washington, a U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Abbas died recently of natural causes while in U.S. custody in Iraq. The official said his health had been deteriorating. He was believed to be in U.S. military custody.

When Abbas was captured, the Palestinian Authority demanded his release, saying the United States had pledged not to prosecute him as part of a blanket promise not to press charges against Palestinians who acted against Israel before interim peace accords were signed in the 1990s.

The United States also endorsed a 1995 interim peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians which grants PLO members immunity for violent acts committed before September 1993, when the two sides signed a mutual recognition agreement.

Abbas has been a marginal figure in the PLO. Abbas, 55, was a member of the PLO’s executive committee but left in 1991. His tiny faction has very few followers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. According to Israel’s Shin Bet security service, the PLF has sent some members to Iraq for military training.

In April 1996, Abbas visited Gaza for the first time as part of the amnesty offered by Israel. At the time, he apologized for the killing of Klinghoffer.

In 1998, he returned to attend a session of the Palestine National Council, the Palestinians’ parliament-in-exile, for a crucial vote on abrogating chapters of the PLO founding charter calling for Israel’s destruction. In the end, Abbas did not participate in the vote.

At that time, Israeli Atorney Gneral Elyakim Rubinstein said Abbas did not pose a threat to Israeli security and that it would be unreasonable to prosecute him for acts committed before 1993.

It seems the only "talents" (I use 'talent', facetiously) possess are propaganda and killing innocent Israelis: the more that die the merrier. How or why, I don't give a damn... his death made my day. I hope it was painful!

I read a letter............somewhere now, I am afraid I no longer recall the link but it was from Klinghoffer's family who have been trying very hard for 18 years to bring him back to the US to stand trial for his murder.

They were not happy with this news, as they felt his death wouldn't produce anything, yet a trial in the US and the attention it would have received could have done far more good in the long run.

    Perhaps they were right.............?

Why bother reading DU, when you can read Reuters?

U.S. Blamed for Achille Lauro Mastermind's Death
    Wed Mar 10,10:45 AM ET

    By Nidal al-Mughrabi

GAZA (Reuters) - Followers of Mohammed Abbas, the Palestinian mastermind of the Achille Lauro cruise ship hijacking in 1985, blamed the United States and Israel on Wednesday for his death in U.S. custody in Iraq.

Captured by American forces in Iraq nearly a year ago, the U.S. military in Baghdad confirmed the death of Abbas, 56. One U.S. official said the burly former guerrilla died of a heart attack Tuesday.

"We hold the Americans responsible for his death, for his assassination," said Omar Shebli, number two to Abbas in the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF).

"They put him to die slowly in a prison cell, deprived of his freedom. His detention was illegal and his conditions in jail were bad," Shebli told Reuters in the Gaza Strip.

He also accused Israel's Mossad intelligence agency of helping U.S. forces "torture" Abbas, saying that Abbas had sent word to supporters that: "Mossad officers, Jewish officers, participated in the interrogation."

Abbas, also known as "Abu Abbas," planned the hijacking of the Italian cruise liner Achille Lauro in October 1985 during which a wheel-chair bound American Jew, 69-year-old Leon Klinghoffer, was killed and thrown into the sea.

Abbas, who was not aboard the ship during an operation that embarrassed Yasser Arafat's Palestine Liberation Organization, spent most of the past 17 years in Iraq, eluding capture by the United States and Italy.

Italy freed Abbas after U.S. warplanes forced his jet to land in Sicily following the hijack, although it later sentenced him -- when he had already left -- to life in jail.

    RENOUNCED VIOLENCE

In 1990, Abbas again left the PLO red-faced when he masterminded a thwarted seaborne attack on Israel, which prompted the United States to suspend a dialogue with the PLO.

"It's poetic justice," said Ra'anan Gissin, a top aide to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. "He started as a terrorist in Iraq, he was brought to justice in an Iraqi prison under U.S. control, and he'll be buried in Iraq."

Calling Abbas a "martyr," Arafat mourned the PLF leader who renounced violence when the Palestinians signed accords with Israel in 1993 and last returned to Palestinian-run territories for a brief visit four years ago.

"President Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian leadership, the PLO and the Palestinian National Authority mourn the death of martyr Abbas," a statement issued in Ramallah said.

The U.S. military did not reveal where Abbas was held since his capture on April 14, 2003.

"Initial reports indicate that he died of natural causes. Efforts by medical personnel to revive him were unsuccessful. An autopsy will be performed," a statement said.

In Gaza, Shebli said Abbas -- a chain smoker whose forehead was scarred by shrapnel -- had made no mention of being ill in letters sent to friends and PLF leaders almost weekly.

"He sent me a letter last week, saying he was in good health and expressing loyalty and solidarity with President Arafat."

Shebli said wakes would be held for Abbas in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Iraq, but it was not clear where he would be buried.

"We have to consult with his wife in Lebanon and also with President Arafat," Shebli said.

Abbas was born near Haifa in 1948, but grew up at al-Yarmuk Palestinian refugee camp near Damascus after his family was displaced by the creation of Israel. He studied Arabic literature and English at Damascus University.

PA Calls for Permitting Burial of Muhmad Abbas in Ramallah
    14:40 Mar 14, '04 / 21 Adar 5764

(IsraelNN.com) Yasser Arafat has filed a formal request with Israel to permit terrorist Muhmad Abbas Abu Abbas to be laid to rest in Ramallah.

Speaking to Kol Yisrael Radio, Minister (Likud) Danny Naveh stated he believes the request will be turned down, adding there is no reason to accommodate the murderer Abbas who was responsible for many deaths, including that of American Jew Leon Klinghoffer.

heaven forbid! That's part of the Holy Land.

A sea burial would be more appropriate and a shark infested location, like the Great Barrier Reef or S. Africa's west coast. Better yet, toss some chum and blood in the water a few minutes before tossing him in.

    The long answer.

A good way to understand Israeli domastic politics is to devide Israel between pro-European and pro-American factions.

The fasionable thing in Europe is turning the other cheek, forgive, self floging for things one is not responsible for and above all: APPEASMENT. Believing peace can be achived only through commarce, trade, and common intrest of gathering wealth, becoming rich. They believe you can buy or bargin with terrorists.

They are dead wrong. Arab ragime cannot tolerate open society or free economy. Poverty is important govermental instrument to oppress their own population and keeping the elite rich and in their place. Anti semetism and anti American incitement is another such tool. Terrorism is the alternative to open war. When one wants constant war but not loosing one throane. Also, terrorism is the obvious by product of decades of Islamist and anti semetic (and anti American, and Anti Hindu, Anti Iranian, Anti African, Anti Christian) indoctrination, originaly used to control their own population, bind them in surfdom (for the common good, of course: war! Self preservation!).

Between 67-87 there was very little terrorism, most of it originated in Arab countries such as Jorden, Lebanon and Tunisia. As long as there was free trade in the "occupaid territories" there was little terrorism. A sharp climb in terrorism, started as soon as the PA was established and Arafat gang took hold, 1993. All majore trade, like oil and cement, could be negociated through Arafat directly, only. He and his men pocketed fortunes. Not their population.

Quite a few scrupelas Israelis, all of them supportive of the extrim left, also made a huge bundle by such crocked trade. Money and politics.
