    Forum Software Upgrade

    Hello,

Today we upgraded the forum software to what is now the most current version of vbulletin.

We've been meaning to upgrade for a while, but the upgrade was pushed off because of the large amount of work that it entails. Although we use a standard bulletin board package, we've built in many custom features, and getting everything back to order is a real task.

But last night we received notification that there was a serious security flaw in earlier versions of the software, which included ours. That's why we upgraded today.

Moving to this new software release will be somewhat of a process, so stay tuned for little tweaks as we make progress. This means that some features which are enabled at this moment may not be available later, as we restore the forum to its former settings.

    - NewsGuy

ps Some time transpired between the import of the posts database and the time we actually went live with this site, so some posts were lost (Maybe 2 hours' worth). Sorry. Please repost if this affected you.

Nice, VB3 Rules! It's definitly more secure, and has awesome new features. What do you think of QuickReply? (in terms of enabling it).

Thanks again for the great job you do of holding this whole thing together. IMO the fonts are a little big and you can't read as much at one time. However, it looks good. Provided the search engine works as well as before, it's one of the best softwares around for this purpose. Oooh! and those emoticons!

    Thumbs up

Thank you very much for all the kind words.

I give the real credit to the company that makes the software, as well as to the talented I.T. guru who was dragged away from his regular job responsibilities to do the tech magic of the import and upgrade. He is really one of the unsung heroes of the Israel Forum.

I'm glad that the folks here like the new version. It adds some very good functionality that we'll get to enjoy.

Ultimately, though, it's what our community members write which makes the forum great to visit.

Everything's fine except I find the difference between icons for new unread posts versus read posts too subtle.

Changes I would like to see:

    No ignore list. :P
More than 3 smilies per post.
    15,000 character maximum per post.
30 second delay between postings, instead of 60.

    Another request:

Can you change the SEARCH button to immediately go to the "advanced" search page, as it did previously?

A primative default of typing in a word/phrase and then searching everything is ridiculous.

It looks fantastic!!Tov meod! I agree with OJ about the smilies though, i like pulling faces! This is not just a great forum, but a database of wonderful knowledge and information about so many things that people struggle to find in their everyday media and internet sites. Plus, a part from a few nutters (of all spectrums and nationalities), it is a tolerant and democratic debating board. Absolutely wonderful, i am very grateful! Kol Hakvod v'todah!

Something is wrong with the search function. I tried searching everything for things like:

    kerry AND election
    kerry AND bush

    Nothing was found.

Another search bug: I enter one word to search only in titles of all forums and I get back some results that do not all have the word in the title:

For example: searched titles for "affairs" and got back 2 matches - one of them did not have the word in the title.

Another request: when viewing new posts or lists of threads, it would be nice to list the thread starter, not just who last posted.

Regarding the search problems, it also seems that the results are sometimes not displaying hits from recent posts, possibly going back a year or more.

Does some sort of a search index have to be regenerated?
