Dichter: More Israelis killed, hurt in past 4 years than in previous 53

    By Gideon Alon, Haaretz Correspondent

The number of Israeli casualties since the start of the intifada, including both deaths and injuries, exceeds the total number of casualties due to terror attacks during the previous 53 years, Shin Bet security service chief Avi Dichter told the cabinet yesterday.

Over the last four years, Dichter said, Israel has suffered 11,356 casualties, compared to 4,319 terror-related casualties between November 1947, when the United Nations voted to establish Israel, and 2000.

Dichter noted a sharp rise in the use of women and children in terror attacks over the past few years. Some 7.8 percent of the Palestinians involved in attacks this year were women or children, up from 2.7 percent in 2001, he said. The increase indicates that the terrorist organizations are having recruitment problems and are therefore turning to weaker, more easily influenced populations, he said.

He also reported increased involvement in terror by Israeli Arabs and residents of East Jerusalem. In the first seven months of this year, 32 Israeli Arabs or East Jerusalem residents were involved in terrorism, he noted. The previous peak was in 2002, when 51 Israeli Arabs were so involved.

Dichter said that some 70 percent of all suicide attacks have been foiled since January 2003, while 30 percent succeeded. In absolute terms, the security services foiled 84 suicide attacks, but 36 bombers succeeded in blowing themselves up.

He also gave figures on Qassam launches, which revealed that the recent Israel Defense Forces operation in northern Gaza not only failed to help, but worsened the situation. Since the start of the year, Palestinians have fired 168 Qassam rockets at Israel. Of these, Dichter said, 62 launches
occurred since June 29, when the IDF entered Beit Hanun.

The Shin Bet chief said that 90 percent of recent Israeli fatalities have resulted from attacks by Fatah-Tanzim cells directed and trained by Hezbollah. Every day, he added, there are about 50 warnings of terror attacks.

Several of the ministers present complained that Dichter's report contained little new information - to which Dichter responded that he cannot give them detailed or classified information, because it will certainly be leaked to the media. The cabinet, he added, receives exactly the same information as the security cabinet and the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, because these two bodies are also full of leaks. The only body to which he does give classified information is the Foreign Affairs Committee's subcommittee on the secret services, since members of that committee do not leak his briefings, he added.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon backed Dichter, telling the ministers that there was no reason for them to act surprised, since they know that everything leaks from cabinet sessions.

Can we predict another record in the next four years as the erection of the wall continues? I'm afraid we can.

I guess Europeans believe that added deterrents increase terrorism or are you just one of the dumb ones?

Report: Palestinian casualties up 100% this year

    By Arnon Regular, Ha'aretz Correspondent

The number of Palestinian casualties almost doubled in the second year of the intifada, and the level of violence in the territories has risen sharply, according to a report compiled by the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group and which is due to be published in East Jerusalem Thursday.

According to data compiled by the group and its director Bassam Eid, this was the main feature of the second year of the intifada. Since the start of the intifada 1,888 Palestinians have been killed, 685 of them in the first year ending September 2001, and 1,203 in the past year. The number of children and youngsters below the age of 18 who were killed in the second year rose to 160 from 146.

Isn’t correct that your Muslim brothers and sisters are responsible for their deaths?

Actually the wall has been nearly 100% effective in stoppping the Muslim mass-murderers from entering Israel in the areas in which the wall is complete.

The reason for the high number of casualties is that the wall is not yet complete in many areas.

2000/2004, not a surprise from the "bulldozer-general", or the "butcher" if you are on the other side.

And yet fewer Israelis have been murdered in the Jihadtifada than even one day in the life of your average Arab on Arab violence terrorist tyrannical state it seems. Iranians, Iraqis, Sudanese, Lebanese, Algerians, Indoesians, Egyptians, Yemenis are all murdering each other and themselves with savage efficiency and yet no one least of all the terrorist supporting jewhating western it's-my-turn-to-scream-dirty-yids-at-the-ISM-meeting morons who keen and complain that no one speaks for the rights of the filthy arab miserables.

As we've seen from the statistics, the present measures seem to lead to more Israelis being killed. Very, very sad, but true. (If we can believe Israeli sources.)

Since the start of violence between Arabs and Jews, roughly the same numbers have been killed on either side over the last sixty years or so (22 000 approx.). In real terms, it has been Israelis who have seen a bigger proportion of their population decimated, compared to Arabs. Same for Palestinians vis a vis Israelis. You could go on forever really, comparing losses, what is never changed is the bitterness amognst people affected. That will be a very strong factor in determining the future of the conflict.

It's telling that the bloodiest most destructive war in the Middle east in recent years was the Iraq-Iran war, Muslim against Muslim, Arab vs Persian, with over 1 million people killed. A war that invloved chemical and biological weapons, something Israel has never used. Does that really show a regard for life by Islamic regimes? Yet whom do people regard as the most 'aggressive' country in the Middle East? One guess...

Aside from wars; it was the Ottoman Turks who have caused most damage to populations in the Middle east with their genocidal campaign against Christian Armenians in the early 20th century, and systematic persecution of Kurds in modern day Turkey.
