Racism against Black Jews in Israel

Ha'aretz has made an interesting write up on how young Ethiopian Jews don't feel like they belong in Israeli society because "Israel is one of the most racist states in the world toward blacks".

This must be an exaggeration. I feel Finland to be very racist. It just doesn't show. Mainly because there are hardly any immigrants here. But I find it very troubling to hear that the same sort of racism and divededness that exists in America also exists in Israel. I find it disgusting that Ethiopians in Israel feel like they are treated like "Niggers" and indentify totally with American Black culture.

When will Israelis start living by Torah? This certainly isn't it.

I'd like Israelis here to shed some light on this subject with their own experiences.

    1. It is nice to know that somebody from Finland is reading the extreme leftist publication from Israel
    2. If you read the Haaretz you may even think that Israel is disintegrating
    3. Speaking of racism, is there a single publication similar to the Israeli Haaretz in all 22 Arab states combined? Why not?
    4. Any immigrant group in initial stages in most countries goes though the painful years of integration.

Hey man. I couldn't really give a damn about racism in the 22 Arab countries surrounding Israel. I'm not concerned about it cause I'm fully aware of the racist and especially anti-Semitic policies of these regimes.

But I'm more worried about my Jewish brethren and their behavior than our cousins. Why? Because this effects me more. Nothing hurts me more than infighting. Seeing that something as archaic as racism against blacks exists in Israel just makes me flip. I agree with your integration theory but hey, if we'd all act according to Torah, we wouldn't have problems like this. And it isn't like Falash Mura have been in Israel for just a short period.

It is a problem, but to state that Israel is the most racist state, or however they've put it is ludicrous. Legally, of course there isn't any discrimination. But some 10 years ago it was pretty much an unspoken rule that blacks don't don't sit near whites on the bus. There is discrimination in employment, and some discrimination elsewhere. At the same time, Ethiopians are very pro-Israel and they generally take great pride in serving in the IDF.

IMO the problem is two-fold. First, they look differently, and secondly their culture is different and many don't speak Hebrew that well. So these separate them from the mainstream.

However, there is progress, and it is just a matter of time for the integration to take place.

We are not from Mars. We are from planet Earth. Our record is much cleaner than the record of most nations. The world labeled Zionism as racism. However, we brought the Jews from Africa in operation Solomon. Integration is a difficult process. The Russian Jews who moved to Israel complain about the same thing. As years go by they will integrate. You know as well as I do that most Jews are color blind as we come in all colors.

    This gas been the case.

This is true. But this is not the case if Jews in non-Jewish countries integrate too much. I attended school in the Jewish school and a boy in my class picked on the Russian Jews especially. And some kids who had (an) Israeli parent(s) were picked on because of their darker skin color. Disgusting.

And people think where childhood trauma comes from! School certainly must be hell for some people.

Every modern country has class and race frictions. Israel haters, typically from countries with massive problems of their own like to point out those in Israel.

I'm sure you could dig up Sephardis who feel oppressed and unhappy. David Shamsha the famous Syrian Jew and antizionist is one such.

But it's just stupid to think that Israel's problems are worse or even different than anyone else's.

    Spain has its Moroccans
    France has its Arabs
    Germany has its Turks
    Germany has its East Germans
    Canada has its Chinese
    Malaysia has its Malaysians
    Iraq has its Sunnis
Saudi Arabia has its everyone else
    Costa Rica has its Mestizo
    Peru has its non Japanese
    Japan has its everyone else
    Ukraine has its non Ukranians
    Russia has its Tartars
Rwanda had a bunch of people killing each other
    Nigeria has its Ibo
    Sudan hates black people
America has it's blacks and hispanics

See the problem is that only America and Israel are really immigrant nations and so have problems associated with trying to assimilate different people who actually want to live there. All those other countries just kill off, drive off or scare off whomever they don't like.

Haven't noticed it much during my stay there, Russians were much more open to their fellow Muslim or Jewish Russians then for Ukrainians and Belorussians, with the Chechen's as an exception.

First of all, a Jewish Russian makes about as much sense as an appley orange.

And secondly, you've got to be kidding. Or you look like you have money.

Again I was rarely out of Moscow, So I don't know much about the rest of Russia, but I met people from all kind of places and that's was the feeling but again I am not stating facts just personal impresions.

So you never seen the neo-nazis or the anti-Semitic newspapers that they sell on every corner? Or have you never heard the kind of stuff they say about Armenians and Georgians, and how they generally refer to people from the Caucausus Mountains region as "blacks" and "animals?"

There was some anti-semitic Graffitis and swastikas, and sometimes heard some people talking badly about Caucausians, one time an old woman looked at me and said to her fellow old woman "God damn with all those Hachiks here you can't walk around safely..." but generaly there was not much more racism than in any other place I visited.
