Some 35 percent of the Jewish public in Israel and 45 percent of immigrants from the former Soviet republics are opposed to the law stating that Arabic is an official language in Israel, along with Hebrew.
According to the survey, which was conducted by “Mutagim†for the Mossawa Center , 60 percent of Jewish Israelis believe the Arab population is treated in racist manner, as opposed to only 26 percent of new immigrants who adhere to the claim.
Moreover, 51 percent of the Jewish public agrees to acknowledge the law that recognizes the Arab-Israelis right to administer their own education system and cultural and religious services; 57 percent of the new immigrant population is opposed to the implementation of the law.
As to the Police Investigations Unit’s decision to reopen the investigation into the October 2000 riots, in which 13 Arab-Israelis lost their lives, 34 percent of those who participated in the survey believe the initial decision to close the investigation was wrong, while 45 percent contend the decision to reopen the case is wrong.
In addition, the relative majority of those surveyed, or 31 percent, believe the Arab citizens are responsible for the eruption of the October riots, the poll showed.
“The poll is indicative of a racist trend among the population, mainly among the Russian-speaking population,†Abir Kobati, spokeswoman for the Mossawa Center, says.
“For this reason we have recently launched anti-racism to turn to those who reject the Arabic language and try to make them reconsider; but we will not hesitate to explore legal possibilities or turn to international organizations for assistance.â€
