Maybe the space aliens would have come down, maybe the Minotaur would come back. Who knows? Facts are facts, sorry.

How come they didn't germanise like the Austrians did, but kept their slavic language and some slavic costums?
Why is there no record that we 'did something' to the natives when we arrived? Most authors simply stated that we were plundered by the Bavarians and then all of a sudden we were equal with Bavaria, but Frankish. Samo's disputed (most claimed) first Slavic democracy before Karantania is not really disputed at all if one reads among other things the Irish Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum. He smuggled arms from France btw. The Avars disappeared from our memory, but not Veneti and Karni. Then our first 'saints' were appointed by the local bishops until Rome decided otherwise, but because we were legaly part of the empire (which the Habsburgs forged to get in), Slovenian liturgy was still written in distant Bavaria (like around 970 in Freising) and we were legaly separated from the emerging German world. Then the land was in many cases owned by both Rome and Vienna, but we could keep the heraldy. After learning three our four languages, which most of our children do, it is easy to 'hear' almost any European language, Ladino, Yiddish.., and what the Nazis really brought here besides the destruction, and people from Turkmenistan, Ukranine, whatever, was communism (we had 200 of them in 41), plus, noone speaks German anymore. We understand the language though. I like German nationalism comparing to Switzerland where a biker hardly gets a beer unless wearing a tie.

This is an Austrian documentary about Carinthian pesants. It's mostly in German. It doesn't focus on anything (like paganism, the early churches, the plebiscite, shows an old Hitler fan somewhere from years ago), but it looks like our people are like a few radicals that frequently hide and I've heard that they've become so racist that they are about to start marrying their distant cousins. Two days ago someone chained himself to one of these billingual signes. They were lucky they weren't all expelled when special concentration camps were built for them and when the Americans liberated them, the Brits arrived one month later, when the war was over. They had no homes to come to. For the first time they really began whispering about it in 2002.

I wonder how France will react when it has its first suicide bomber... and second, and fiftieth, and 150th...

I can't see they would act much differently than they have. The secret to boiling a lobster (or a frog) is to turn up the heat slowly. After all they championed the Saddam regime no matter how many catastropically bad existential decisions Saddam made. I can't see that them reacting any differently to this.

But I give the chances of that a pretty low likelihood. Why would the Islamists have any reason to irritate their host nation, one that has been rather forgiving of them?

I'm with Mediocrates. Suicide bombings are not likely to happen, simply because France borders Spain, germany, Italy, as opposed to bordering Syria, Iraq, etc.

Then again, would the US and London allow riots to advance to the level of possible suicide bombings?

    Riots in London

"Then again, would the US and London allow riots to advance to the level of possible suicide bombings?"

I don't think the British police would allow the riots to continue, as they have in France. Especially in London. If you look back to the riots in Brixton in the early 80's, the later 'poll tax riots', and very recently, the May day riots and even the pro hunting demonstration in the capital, the British police would in no way be as restrained as the French police...and thats putting it mildly!

    Yes...

I can’t believe the news today
Oh, I can’t close my eyes and make it go away
    How long...
How long must we sing this song?
    How long? how long...

’cause tonight...we can be as one
    Tonight...

    Broken bottles under children’s feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won’t heed the battle call
    It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall

    Sunday, bloody sunday
    Sunday, bloody sunday
Sunday, bloody sunday (sunday bloody sunday...)
    (allright lets go!)

    And the battle’s just begun
There’s many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart

    Sunday, bloody sunday
    Sunday, bloody sunday

    How long...
How long must we sing this song?
    How long? how long...

’cause tonight...we can be as one
    Tonight...
    Tonight...

    Sunday, bloody sunday (tonight)
    Tonight
    Sunday, bloody sunday (tonight)
    (come get some!)

Wipe the tears from your eyes
    Wipe your tears away
    Wipe your tears away
    I wipe your tears away
    (sunday, bloody sunday)
I wipe your blood shot eyes
    (sunday, bloody sunday)

Sunday, bloody sunday (sunday, bloody sunday)
Sunday, bloody sunday (sunday, bloody sunday)
    (here I come!)

And it’s true we are immune
When fact is fiction and tv reality
    And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die

The real battle yet begun (sunday, bloody sunday)
To claim the victory jesus won (sunday, bloody sunday)
    On...

    Sunday bloody sunday
    Sunday bloody sunday...

U2 and minotaurs and gendarmes, oh my!
On a more serious note, I pose the question: could France have prevented these riots? Yes.
    then: Why didn't they?

They used to be very good, but they should have stopped a long time ago.
