Israel greets proposed Red Cross symbol

New emblem, to be called red crystal, will pave way for Jewish State’s inclusion in organization
    Associated Press

Israel’s rescue service on Tuesday welcomed the intention of the international Red Cross to introduce a new emblem that will pave the way for Israel’s inclusion into the lifesaving organization.
Switzerland will host a diplomatic conference in early December to approve the proposed new emblem, to be called the red crystal. The conference is expected to resolve a long-running dispute between Israel and the international Red Cross.

Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service currently uses a red Star of David to identify its ambulances and medical workers, rejecting the red cross used by most countries and the red crescent preferred by Muslim nations.

But Israel has not been permitted to use its symbol on international humanitarian missions, and has been denied full membership in the international Red Cross for 57 years because of the issue.

The red crystal depicts a square standing on one corner, with a blank white interior and a thick red border. Dr. Noam Yifrach, chairman of Magen David Adom, said Israeli aid workers would be able to insert a Star of David symbol into the crystal when working overseas.

“I am proud that they recognize the fact that we are a good Red Cross organization and they are stopping the prejudice against us,” He said. “It is an important thing for us, to be part of lifesaving organizations that operate in the world.”

    American support paved the way

The 192 countries that have signed the Geneva Conventions on the conduct of warfare are being invited to the December 5-6 meeting in Geneva to debate the proposed emblem, the international Red Cross said.

Yifrach said support for Israel within the international Red Cross has grown dramatically in recent years, and he expected almost all of the Red Cross organizations to approve the new symbol.

He said this was mostly due to American backing, singling out U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Senator Hillary Clinton of New York for their support. Clinton is scheduled to visit with Magen David Adom representatives in Israel next week, he said. Clinton will be in Israel to attend ceremonies marking the tenth anniversary of the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin.

The American Red Cross has also been campaigning for full Israeli membership for years. It has withheld six years’ of payment owed to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - totaling approximately USD 34 million since May 2000 to protest the MDA’s exclusion.

The American Red Cross itself faces the prospect of being excluded for not paying its dues, a gesture not lost on its Israeli colleagues.

“We are a small organization, and if they did not help us, we simply would not be part of the Red Cross,” Yifrach said. “We are happy to go to sleep at night, knowing that overseas somebody is thinking about us.”

Jesus who is of the linage of David (per Christianity)surely identifies the Hexagram as part of his royal family symbol Why would Christians use the cross as a symbol (which indicates death) instead?

Why would Muslims burnt Israeli flags which contain Hexagram which is the seal of the prophet Solomon? is it not disrespect projected towards prophet solomon?

And what are the thought/opinions over the Hexagram?

And would it be bothered if israel use the red Hexagram for international humanitarian missions?

Another emblem again? Can't be true!

Sooner or later a foreigner visiting a certain country will not know where to look for help. The Muslims may already have their own emblem, which is just as confusing.

The original name was the Red Cross, but I don't think very many people will connect the Red Cross to the Christian Faith.

If a new emblem is made, and used by all, it should bear no reference to any religious symbols.

Obviously I made a mistake in thinking the new emblem would be one used by Israel only. A new emblem used by all member states is exactly what is needed.

I have to admit at first I had the same impression but after reading second time I realize I missed the part says it will be for all.

So it will be sort of universal emblem I greet it too.

Still I have not got an answer why seal of Solomon will irritate as it part of all monotheistic groups?...hmm

The Red Cross was blatantly anti-semitic by allowing Muslim Nations to use the crescent symbol, while exluding Israel for wanting to use theirs.

However Israel should not have made a fuss about the symbol in the first place, Israel should have simply consented to change it to a cross.

I hardly think it was made from that reason more likely from concern it might attract violence

Countries who willing to receive our aid should not bothered by which symbol we come as long it is not satanic
