Israeli left awakes to new dawn - and new leader

    Peretz wins Labor vote

needless to say, I support the new Labor leader.
He is much more "classical" left, then Peres:
    - Peretz is socialist in his economic ideology
    - Peretz is closer to Sarid in his foriegn policy

Peretz, can present a true alternative to Sharon, whereas Peres was comfortable (and content) at being second-in-command to Sharon.

Why does that matter? I know a way back one of the Sabras here explained to me that in their view Israeli politics and social welfare were largely interchangeable, at least in intent. Does that mean that you elect people according to what kind of warm fuzzy multiculturalist aura they throw off?

You ask ' why does that matter ? ' . When JFK was elected the first Catholic President you don't think it mattered ?
It means we are moving past the problems of the past.
Many pundits said here that he would not be elected because he was Mizrahi. They have been proved wrong.

It meant something to the pundits who thought it would never happen. But it didn't change the lives of Catholics in America.

“This is a reality but I won’t deal with it in terms of recognizing or admitting it.”

Maybe this slogan will answer that question since right wingers love slogans so much.

    "Only Peretz can"
