Why the Arabs hate Israel is a complex question, but one that needs to be explored. I have come to certain conclusions, and the primary one is that the Arabs hate Israel for one reason more than any other: pride.

You see, Israel is a sore in the Arab's side. It is the West in the mideast. By the 20th century, the once glorious Arab nations were under the thumb of European imperialism. Britain and France ruled them, dominated them, and shamed them with their military and economic superiority.

Unlike India, the Arab nations did not "win" their independence (by passive resistance and nonviolence, might I add). They remain shamed. But unlike Africa, they were not powerless, they had the lifeblood of modern industry - oil. Lawrence of Arabia was European.

Israel, however, is a constant reminder of the West's dominance over the Arab states. Israel is a tiny country, a country of JEWS, no less (not exactly known for their fighting prowess), that consistently defeated much larger Arab forces - of multiple nations, not 1-on-1. Israel has a modern economy, unlike the rest of the mideast. It developed the Nuclear bomb. It survived without their oil. It survived with a democracy, as opposed to a paternalistic dictatorship. Israel is a leader in science and technology. It made the desert bloom. It survived all the ways (economic, political pressure through Europe, terrorism) that the Arab nations tried to destroy it with.

And that is a reminder to the Arab people of what they HAVE NOT done. It is a constant reminder of their failures.

And that is why there can be no real peace until the Arab nations are themselves reformed into modern democracies. Because until they have pride in themselves, the only source of their pride will be the hope that Israel will eventually be destroyed.

Not because of those things, in spite of those things. For whatever reason they can name today, tomorrow or the next century, they hate us. The always have and always will. Whether it's shame or arrogance or ignorance or displacement of rage directed at themselves or something they suckled from their mother's breast. It's not rationale, it defies explanation or analysis or frankly, much time wasted spent dwelling on it. Like my mama used to say "Don't forget you're Jewish because nobody else will."

Maybe it's cultural or political or who cares why. Whatever reason you can ascribe will apply equally to a million other people who can get along with each other and with Jews, at least at arms' length. Maybe it's about that they lived in the bronze age in living memory and we send people into space for fun. Maybe they can't get good halal Burger King. Maybe we don't have to spend time brushing the teeth that bite us.

I don't even believe this anymore. I believe that given an opportunity, if they held wide open elections they would opt for fascism. The Algerians did, why not the others?

Yes, this article is more a description of European Muslims than Israeli/Palestinian Muslims, but the same principle applies in "Western" Israel and is magnified by the fact that the conflict between their civilizations has a long history.

You never know with Thomas Friedman, sometimes he says the most idiotic things from his self-righteous pulpit, and then he writes something apolitical and I can actually tolerate it. Speaking of, has anyone seen any interviews or speeches by Bernard-Henri Levy lately as he's doing a book tour for "American Vertigo" which I have not read yet but plan on it. Some of my liberal Jew friends went ans saw his speech in LA and were quite surprised by how pro-USA Bernard came off. I saw him on Tavis last night and was actually very impressed.

I think Jews are hates by Arabs, for similar reasons Jews were always hated by others:

We Jews are the only people (at least in the West) who hold true and absolute defenitions of Justice, morality, religious and ideological tolerance, skptisism, human humidity before G-d's greatness, beliefe in the imperfection and inherit deficencies of men, even the greatest of the great, the Jewish beliefe in a better future, the idea of reward and punishment, equal reaction to any action, choise and so much more...

Jew's worst enemies, are always those who wish controll over morality (such as the Nazis and communist and now far-leftists), trynats who believed they're own devinity, feudals wishing to preserve surfdom and their own privilages for all times, religious leaders who considered their own thoughts to be absolute truth and beyoned critisism or skeptisism, Judges who rulled unjustly to serve an evil political agenda... ALL were enemies of the Jewish people just because the Jewish people presented a working and superior alternative.

This is no incedent, that a working modern democracy, such as that of USA, has coppied and influanced so much, by ideas first presented in the Hebrew bible. Ideas such rule of law, justice, equallity of all men before the law, the right to persue happyness, skeptisism which manifested in freedom of speach, religious tolerance and ect...

Arabs wish to create a society where none [from what mention above] exists. Arabs want a society where religious leaders speak the words of god and no-one allowed to doubt their words and live, Judges which bend the law in favour of the strong, self rightouse tyrants who believe in their own personal divine mission to do what ever they're whim or caprise takes them. The religious justicifaction for enslavement of others, women children, blacks and those of different racial or religious affiliation.
