The open question: is "the moderate muslim" a myth, such that, in reality, no large difference between the values of the jihadists and al-queda types and the vast majority of the ummah.

A struggle against oppression, fighting injustice, overcoming temptations, constantly striving within yourself to be a better person, and in this case, "a kind of Jihad" is to educate those who don't know about what the other side thinks.

Al Qaeda are a terrorist group. They do however eat, sleep, drink, have hobbies, and do all the things we all do as well.

If someone from Al Qaeda says they love choclate, or are fans of a certain pop star, it doesn't mean that we should immediately boycott choclate because Al Qaeda members love it, or that we should stop buying CD's of the pop star they admire!
